Ready, steady, bake! Join the St Catherine’s Bake Off!
Get your rolling pins at the ready – the Great British Bake Off is arriving at St Catherine’s Hospice!
The competition takes place on Sunday June 28 in the hospice’s fantastic 30th anniversary marquee, as part of the charity’s Afternoon Tea and Recipe Book launch and Antiques Valuation Afternoon.
Keen bakers from across the area are invited to compete for the coveted crown in four mouth-watering categories of cup cake, Victoria sandwich, tray-bake and fruit scones. There is also a category dedicated to young bakers under 16.
Prizes will be up for grabs in each category and as well as sifting out the area’s best bakers, St Catherine’s is also set to be a winner – as people pay a £5 fee per entry, the proceeds of which go directly to the charity to help fund the hospice’s specialised care.
The same day, the St Catherine’s Cook Book – a collection of recipes put together by staff, volunteers and supporters – will be launched. The book was inspired by an earlier edition called St Catherine’s Food Fayre which was produced in the mid eighties to help raise funds for the hospice.
Bernadette Baxter, who has worked at St Catherine’s since it opened its doors in 1985, said: “As we celebrate our 30th anniversary we decided it was the perfect opportunity to revisit the idea and put together a follow-up edition. “There’s all sorts of mouth-watering recipes inside, which have kindly been shared by those with a connection to the charity. Cooking and baking has long been part of St Catherine’s – each month myself and some of the other staff and volunteers bake cakes which are sold to help raise funds. The recipe book is building on this and takes it a step further – giving people the chance to learn how to do it for themselves at home.”
Afternoon tea will be served at The Mill cafe within the hospice grounds from 1pm, while experts from Warren and Wignall auctioneers will also be on hand in the marquee to value antiques and collectibles in return for a donation to the hospice.
Emma Jacovelli, fundraiser at St Catherine’s Hospice, said: “There’s going to be loads going on here in St Catherine’s Park that afternoon – you really can have your cake and eat it!
“We can’t wait to see the beautiful bakes entered into our competition and are looking forward to launching our exciting new recipe book. Meanwhile, an indulgent afternoon tea at The Mill is the perfect way to treat yourself without a guilty conscience – because you’ll be helping to support St Catherine’s in the process!”
