VOLUNTEER WEEK: Jack has been supporting St Catherine’s since he was 16
After lending a hand at various fundraising events for St Catherine’s since he was 16-years-old, Jack now volunteers on a more regular basis for the hospice – in the Leyland furniture shop and out on the roads as a delivery driver.
Now aged 22, Jack enjoys meeting people and developing his customer service skills.
“My auntie and my grandma were cared for at St Catherine’s,” he explains. “The support they received was amazing, and the aftercare we received as a family was also incredible.
“A few of my family members started volunteering at the main hospice events, like the Santa Dash and Yellow Day, and a few months ago I started at the Leyland furniture shop.
“I serve customers, book deliveries, and go out in the van to pick up donations and to make deliveries.
“The staff are all really friendly, and you get to know the regular customers too, and hear their stories and find out about their connections to St Catherine’s. It’s like one big family.”
Jack, who enjoys fishing, running and kickboxing, adds: “It’s a great cause, and it really broadens your horizons and gives you a new perspective about people’s situations.
“It’s helped improve my communication and customer service skills, and it goes in my favour in job interviews because it shows that I’m committed and dedicated, and that I have work experience.
“I’m looking for work at the moment but even when I get a job, I’d like to carry on volunteering because I really enjoy it.”
