Story

Mum, what can I say, you were an incredible Mother, Wife and Friend.
You always put everyone first, and you and Dad went without to make sure that all your children had a great childhood.
You and Dad (David) had almost 66 years of love and friendship together and made some wonderful memories.
Your final days at St Catherine’s were magical. The atmosphere in the hospice is truly amazing and all the staff are wonderful. You had your favourites, (you know who you are), but it was the male staff that always put a big smile on your face. Some of the staff had started calling you the Queen, so we made you a Crown so you could fulfil your role.
Room 16 is a great room, and as a family we made the most of it. I’m sure at times it must have sounded like there was a stag or hen party going on, but we wanted to make sure that the room was full of laughter, not tears. Sure, there were tears, but the laughter outweighed them. We filled the white board with complimentary drawings of one another (not), and this amused you and most of the staff and visitors.
In your final days, the love you and Dad had for each other was most apparent. You were surrounded by your family virtually 24/7 and we take comfort in the fact that you know how loved you are. I say ‘are’ instead of ‘were as we will never stop loving you.
We all have the wonderful memories of your last couple of weeks at St Catherine’s, and we can’t thank the staff enough
I hope you keep your promise to watch over us, and annoy Dad.

Our love always and forever

Mum has a heart of gold. Always thinking about others. Even in her last few hours she wanted to make sure everyone was ok. If everyone followed her example the world would be a much better place to live in. Mum was very humble and I think she would be amazed at the outpouring of love that has been shown to her. Looking back over the years I think she was an angel without wings…. Now she’s got those too.

Mike Baron

Mike donated £100 on 27th August 2024. This donation went to the general donations instead of Mum’s tribute page. Unfortunately the tribute page amount cannot be altered, but the internal amount for Mum’s donation has been altered at St Catherine’s to include Mike’s donation.
Thank you Mike

Shirley.
Firstly, what a beautiful and fitting service for you.Bright, cheerful but also sad.
We will always remember you as being kind and caring and also being a seriously good laugh.
Even having your own health issues you would visit and bring a smile to dad’s face (Fran) and have him crying with laughter when he was at his end.
Thank you Shirley.
Love Vivian, Steven and Andrew…

Message from Barbara Sumler.

Having been friends for over 60 years, I can honestly say that if I could have chosen a sister it would have been Shirley.
For over 60 years we have talked, laughed and shed a few tears together, but matter how we felt, we always finished up smiling and laughing together.
Shirley was a real tonic, a good listener and enjoyed a good giggle.

‘ Thank you for being my bestest friend ‘

Love Barbara xx
